Simulation Center Specialized Training
The Clinical Skills Simulation Centers at FAU Goal of Specialized Training for Medical Students, Residents, Practicing Nurses and First Responders is to enhance
patient safety and treatment by simulating medical scenarios and providing the opportunity to practice, prepare and analyze every aspect of the chain of patient care and treatment. By creating a sense of reality, through the "suspension of disbelief" on the part of the participants, they believe they are involved in an actual medical care. This added dimension challenges even the most seasoned professional, and greatly enhances the learning experience. Through the utilization of sophisticated simulators that combine "high tech" with "real world" responses, the Center simulates medical conditions and employs interactive activities to repeat these procedures until the desired response becomes second nature. Since the key to learning is to develop "critical thinking", our participants will be better able to respond to the myriad of scenario conditions that the professionals will encounter outside of the Center.
Our high fidelity mannequin simulators display the actual physiological signs and symptoms of human patients affected by the actual medical or trauma events. They will react to treatment by duplicating the human characteristics associated with these agents. The mannequins breathe; have variable blood pressure, and heart rates that replicate the human response to medical scenarios. The mannequins can bleed under program control, and will react to treatment, including drugs and ventilation therapy applied. If incorrect drugs or dosages are administered, the patient will respond exactly as a human patient would respond. The simulators will track all actions taken and all pharmacological agents given to the patients. The events will be videotaped to playback for debriefing, enhancing the learning and retention experience. By utilizing the unique Simulation Center, advanced training courses take on a realistic, hands-on approach.
