Vascular Surgery Fellowship Rotations/Curriculum

Clinical rotations cover all areas of vascular surgery and allow for graduated knowledge and technical skills with 1:1 mentorship from our surgical faculty.  The fellows will work closely with general surgery residents (PGY 2-4) rotating on the vascular surgery service and will assume increasing responsibility for care pre-operatively, operatively, and post-operatively over the course of the fellowship. There will be core rotations in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in the hospital setting utilizing the latest technologies in a recently constructed Hybrid Operating Room as well as ample opportunity to treat patients in an outpatient office-based surgery center and vascular surgery clinic. In addition, there are dedicated rotations for endovascular robotics, non-invasive vascular laboratory, radiology/imaging, and wound care as well as a large vascular trauma experience at a Level 1 trauma center.

Education is a priority for our trainees. The vascular team (fellows, residents, and faculty) will make daily Teaching Rounds and meet Friday mornings for our protected educational conference series. This consists of an Interesting Case conference during which cases are presented by the fellows and residents to the faculty for review and discussion, Morbidity and Mortality conference, and clinical case-based and basic science didactic lectures, which follow the V-SCORE curriculum and Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery Textbook. Journal club and Grand Rounds are conducted monthly. Research conference is held once per quarter, which enables the fellows to present their research projects to the faculty allowing for constructive feedback and guidance. There are also select lectures given throughout the academic year on resident wellness, leadership, career development, contract negotiation, radiation safety, and operating room ergonomics.

Call Frequency – Call will be from home divided equally between the fellows backing up General Surgery residents covering Vascular Surgery in house call 24/7.

Moonlighting – Moonlighting is not permitted.

Evaluation – To ensure you gain proficiency and develop the corresponding technical skills, your performance is monitored throughout the Vascular Surgery Fellowship. You are formally evaluated by your supervising faculty member after completing each clinical rotation, and you then meet with the program director to review these evaluations. In addition, you regularly evaluate the faculty to ensure your educational goals are being met, and there are also 360 degree evaluations of the fellows by nursing, allied health professionals, and patients.
