Health and Behavior: Analysis of Cardiac Signals Related to Atrial Arrhythmia

Over Summer 2017, Kelly Nguyen worked with Dr. Behnaz Ghoraani and her graduate student, Prasanth Ganesan, to help develop a program in MATLAB that will transform a 3D model of the heart into a 2D map. This map will be used to improve catheter guiding algorithms which are used in atrial fibrillation treatments. To do this, the team modeled their program off of another heart transformation process done by Caroline Roney. After the team finished developing the code for the program and applying it to their practice model (a 3D cylinder), they moved on to working with the data in the left atrium of the heart. As they are using a mesh of coordinate points instead of a triangulated mesh to model the heart, they have a very large amount of data to work with. Since the team anticipates that MATLAB will not be able to handle all of the data points, they are going to be working on downsizing our heart data through removing the appendages, left pulmonary vein and the right pulmonary vein in the next phase of the project.
