Housing Reassignment FAQ’s


When is the Reassignment Request form available?

  • The Reassignment Request form will be available to students with an assignment in the Housing Portal from March 12 at 9 a.m. to July 1 at 5 p.m.

How are Reassignment Requests prioritized?

  • Returning students: Requests are prioritized based on Priority Group and tuition deposit date from the housing renewal process.
  • New students: Requests are prioritized based on tuition deposit date only.
  • Submission date of the reassignment request does not impact priority.

How many room options can I request?

  • Students may request one different room type.

Can I request a different roommate?

  • Students may request one different roommate.
    • Requests must include the first name, last name, and Z# of the desired roommate.
    • Reassignments will be granted only if space becomes available for both students in the same room or suite.
    • It is unlikely that Housing and Residential Education will be able to accommodate a request for a different space AND a different roommate due to the demand for campus housing.  

When will I receive a reassignment?

  • Reassignments are processed on a rolling basis until July 1st but are not guaranteed due to high demand.
  • Reassignments to a different room type are based on cancellations.
  • Roommate pairing requests will only be accommodated if two open spaces become available in the same room or suite.

Can I cancel my housing if I don’t receive reassignment?

  • Students who do not receive their requested reassignment may cancel their housing. However, they are bound to the Terms and Conditions of the Contract.
  • Cancellation reasons and fees are outlined in Section 10, Page 5 of the Terms and Conditions of the Contract.

How many times can I submit a reassignment request?

  • Students may submit one reassignment request for either a different roommate OR a different room type. 

How long do I have to accept a reassignment offer?

  • Students have 48 hours to accept a reassignment offer via their FAU email.
    • If no response is received within 48 hours, the offer will go to the next student in line.
    • If a student does not respond, they will remain on the reassignment list and keep their original housing assignment.

Will I receive my new room number and roommate details with the reassignment offer?

  • The offer will include the room type you are being offered and the semester rate. 

When will I receive my updated room details after accepting a reassignment?

  • A new housing assignment with be sent to your FAU email within 48 business hours.
  • Roommate/suitemate details will be available on the Housing Application Status page in the Housing Portal.

Can I go back to my original room if I change my mind after accepting a reassignment?

  • No, once a reassignment is accepted, the original room assignment cannot be restored because that space will have been offered to another student.

What happens if I decline a reassignment offer?

  • The student will be removed from the reassignment list.
  • The original housing assignment will remain active for the semester.
  • The student will not be offered another reassignment and will remain financially obligated to their housing contract.

Can I request a reassignment if I was on the waitlist and just received a housing assignment?

  • Yes, any student who has received a housing assignment may request a reassignment one time until July 1st.  

Will I be notified if there is an approved Emotional Support Animal (ESA) or Service Animal in my new room?

  • Students who are being offered a reassignment will be notified if there is an approved ESA or services animal in the suite. However, ESA’s and service animals are often not approved until later in the summer. You will be notified when Housing and Residential Education is aware of the ESA or service animal. If you are not able to live with an ESA or service animal, please register with SAS.

Will I receive priority for a room change after move-in if I don’t receive a reassignment by July 1st?

  • Students who request a reassignment prior to move-in will not receive priority for a room change after move-in.
    • Room change requests after move-in begin two weeks into the semester and are subject to availability.
