Perceptions & Uses of Generative AI in Education from Social Media Data: Updating Education in the Generative AI Era with GPT Analysis
Overview
The goal of the project is to analyze Reddit posts and comments to better understand the perception and use of generative AI in schools. We will be utilizing OpenAI's GPT models for our analysis as part of a larger research project testing the efficacy of LLM's verses traditional methods. The processes conducted are sentiment analysis, topic modeling and author labeling. To better optimize the results of GPT, we will utilize a prompt engineering tool called DSPy.
Community Benefit
With the emergence of generative AI tools, the entire way that students learn and that teachers teach is in flux. There is a need then to find and understand how these changes are impacting various aspects of schooling. With this project, we will find out what the public is discussing in terms of generative AI in schools and how they feel about it. This is valuable information to, for example, teachers and policy makers. For teachers, the data is important so they know how their students are using these tools and so they can appropriately adjust their teaching or make restrictions. For policy makers, this data is extremely relevant as they navigate this new reality of generative AI and determine if policy restricting its use needs to be made.
