Overview

Naval vessels and installations that operate in various environments require a reliable energy source to carry out their missions. Currently, they are relying on traditional energy sources like diesel generators and nuclear reactors which have an environmental concern due to carbon emissions. The main objective of PHECNI is to provide a portable alternative renewable energy source that is currently unpopularized in the world. PHECNI aims to assist in harvesting energy from the flow of water without damaging the environment while prioritizing the portability aspect to make it applicable to a wide variety of users. The main functions of the system’s design include the portability feature for easy deployment and retrieval, swivel alignment system that will assist the system in aligning itself with the flow of water for optimal energy collection, hydrokinetic energy conversion process that ensures the mechanical energy of water is transformed into electrical energy, and the remote monitoring system to report values of voltage, pressure/depth, and RPM of the rotor to the user for troubleshooting and ensuring the system is working properly while submerged below the surface.   

 

Community Benefit

Our design, PHENCI, could be adaptable for the civilians of remote communities by adjusting its scalability to produce more power. It will be a clean and renewable energy source for off-grid communities. It is environmentally friendly, having no greenhouse gas emissions or pollutants. It will decrease the dependence on imported fossil fuels and will stabilize energy prices by promoting energy independence.
