Self-Docking Autonomous Surface Vessel
Sponsor: Naval Engineering Education Consortium (NEEC) program
Abstract
The goal of the Self-Anchoring and Self-Docking Autonomous Surface Vessel (ASV) is to provide a method for a vehicle to autonomously dock and anchor. Through the use of a product of this nature, the necessary human interaction will be minimized and the cost of operation will decrease. To accomplish these tasks, a catamaran outfitted with an electromagnetic docking system and a 2:1 short scope anchoring system was chosen for its simplicity and effectiveness. Community Benefit: Over the past several years, the need for Autonomous Surface Vehicles has increased; Specifically, for those that can navigate to areas that manned operations are not possible for either health or logistic reasons. These vehicles have various uses in the area of environmental, research, and military capabilities.
