S-49 Spillway (Platinum Horizon Engineering)

Overview

The Platinum Horizon Engineering Team is working to replace the S-49 Spillway with an alternative structure that contains a new control building, new stilling wells, and a new SCADA system.  The downstream apron currently has severe abrasive erosion, with an exposed rebar grid. This is due to the force of water and the turbulence created from the 18-foot head drop located across the structure. The downstream pier walls are also spalled with a ½” wide crack, located near the concrete cap for the wingwalls (observed at the end of the downstream north abutment wall). The sheet pile wingwalls are corroded and have several large holes caused by the deterioration of coating.

Community Benefit:  The flood design discharge of the structure is 4,680 cubic feet per second. This structure helps to prevent flooding of the residential areas surrounding the canal. This includes saltwater intrusion that can kill or disrupt the area's ecosystem. The proposed solution can also protect the surrounding neighborhoods from king tides and other natural events like hurricanes which can cause overflowing of the canal.
