Abstract
The goal of our project is to design “The Children First” school for 400 children aged two to eleven years old, and an after-care program for the same age group. The school will include pre-kindergarten to 5th grade and it will be located at 1718 S Douglas Street, Lake Worth Beach FL 33460. The project location is surrounded by residential communities which enable children from these communities to walk or bicycle to school. The idea is to avoid the monotony of using public transportation and reduce the cost of driving for parents, while enjoying the environmental benefits that result from less vehicles on the road. The school has been designed to include a clustered classroom arrangement, outdoor play areas for children, sufficient parking for staff and parents, a bus drop-off and pick up zone, student walkways, landscaping buffers for beatification as well as lighting for vision and safety. The after-care program makes this school better than schools within the area. The design also includes an energy saving model that uses a solar paneled roof. Water for irrigation will be obtained through rain harvesting and water channeled from the detention pond that will be located on site.
