NRT Program Welcome Reception
Monday, Aug 23, 2021The NSF-Funded Traineeship in Data Science Technologies and Applications Welcome Reception was held on Monday, August 23, 2021, at the Gangal Global Innovation Hall. This event marked the beginning of this transdisciplinary project. Dr. Furht introduced the first cohort consisting of 12 NRT students, 7 fully funded and 5 not funded, which will receive a certificate of completion once the 6 NRT courses are successfully completed.
The students had the opportunity to meet members of the NRT team, industry collaborators, and professors.
Dr. Janet Robishaw, Chair of the Bio-medical Science Department shared some information from her department, background, and the importance of this program. Dr. Stella Batalama, Dean, College of Engineering and Computer Science, welcomed the students, and Alfredo Cateriano, Ph.D., VP, Data & Analytics from Southeast Toyota Finance emphasized the importance of data science and analytics and its implementation in current times.
The first cohort is very diverse. We have students from different academic backgrounds such as Biology, Computer Science, Business Administration and Economics, Health Science, Information Technology, Sociology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Fine Arts, and Psychology. Some students are pursuing their Master’s degrees while others their Ph.D. degrees. The students have started their classes with a lot of excitement and ready to learn.
