Upward Bound Summer STEM Institute 2024
by Ana Isabel Escobar Ostolaza | Friday, Aug 09, 2024The Upward Bound Summer STEM Institute 2024 at the Florida Atlantic University College of Engineering and Computer Science offered a transformative learning experience for middle and high school students. Academic Coordinator Donteea Dye Jr. expressed gratitude, stating, “What a summer! Thank you for the opportunity to engage with hands-on learning at FAU.”
The program showcased an array of engineering and computer science disciplines through immersive activities:
- Civil, Environmental, and Geomatics Engineering: Under the guidance of Dr. Masoud Jahandar Lashaki and Dr. Fred Bloetscher, students explored subfields within civil and environmental engineering. Practical sessions in landscaping and bridge-building highlighted the significance of innovative engineering solutions.
- Electrical Engineering and Computer Science: Led by Dr. Hari Kalva and graduate students, participants delved into AI data retrieval, augmented reality with Magic Leap glasses, and robotics, showcased through demonstrations in the Multimedia Lab and an encounter with the robotic dog.
- Biomedical Engineering: Dr. Mirjana Pavlovic’s team presented an engaging lecture on the pancreas, followed by a hands-on activity where students created artificial pancreas models to simulate insulin delivery, bridging theory and application.
- Ocean and Mechanical Engineering: At the Dania Beach SeaTech campus, Dr. Pierre-Philippe Beaujean and the ocean engineering faculty introduced students to marine robotics. Students built and raced small-scale boats, bringing concepts to life in a stimulating, interactive environment.
FAU remains committed to fostering connections between secondary and post-secondary education, inspiring future engineers and computer scientists through impactful, hands-on experiences. A special thanks to Upward Bound and our dedicated faculty and staff for making this summer unforgettable.
