The FSMS (Florida Surveying and Mapping Society) FAU Student Chapter had its first chapter meeting of the Fall 2023 semester! With over 40 students, alumni, faculty/staff, and industry guests in attendance, FAU welcomed representatives from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to our Boca Raton Campus. Daniel Colling and Paige Rogolino (FAU Geomatics Alumna) talked about the NGA’s Geomatics office and its projects along with the scholarship and job opportunities available to geomatics students. Dan and Paige shared their insights and benefits of working for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency in a highly interactive session.

On behalf of the FSMS, Jim Sullivan presented the 2023 FSMS Professional Excellence Award to the FAU Geomatics Engineering Program. Dr. Kaisar, Chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatics Engineering, accepted the award and thanked FSMS’s recognition of our Geomatics Engineering Program. The FSMS Professional Excellence Award is given to an individual, sustaining firm or public agency that “has performed outstanding work in the field of research or work in academia,” or “has performed exemplary teaching activities and improvements in surveying and mapping education.” The FAU Geomatics Program Advisory Board members, Earl Soeder, Mike Avirom, and Steve Brickley also attended the meeting together with a few professional surveyors from the local surveying community.
