chair-j.hashemiTo the students: At FAU’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, we have created an exciting and new Biomedical Engineering Department to produce up to date and well-prepared engineers and scientists of the future. The department offers three tracks at the undergraduate level including 1) tissue Engineering and Biomaterials, 2) Bio robotics, and 3) Biomedical Devices and Smart Health. The curricula are designed with focus on the state of the art in technology for hands-on experiences and a theoretical foundation to match. The curricula will be delivered by faculty and research professors from a variety of fields with expertise in biomedical devices, advanced robotics, tissue engineering, bio photonics, bio informatics, and orthopedics. The faculty of the department are extremely active in cutting edge research in their respective fields and are supported by prestigious agencies and industries in the nation including National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Florida Department of Health (FDOH) and foundations. All of our faculty are well published and are affiliated with leading professional societies associated with the medical field.

To support the program and its students, FAU has invested in a brand new and fully loaded Biomedical Engineering Laboratory to serve a variety of hands-on courses and experiences; a brand-new ISO-8 class “Clean Room” is established to teach the students techniques for design and fabrication of micro devices for biomedical applications; and a new bio robotics laboratory is developed with numerous modern robots. These facilities will be dedicated to your education and training with the objective of transforming you into biomedical engineers of the future.

Some of the key features of our program include:

  1. The Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials track is designed for those who are interested in becoming research and development engineers in a laboratory setting. Furthermore, the track is designed to meet all the requirements of medical school for those interested in pursuing an MD degree.
  2. The Biomedical Devices and Smart Health as well as the Bio Robotics tracks are designed such that those interested may also pursue an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Masters degree in a 4+1 BS/MS setting. Our BME department is the first in the nation to offer such an important combination for those who may be interested.
  3. Each track will include a “Research” course to become familiar with key tools and methods used in research. All students will receive a “research active” certificate upon graduation.
  4. The capstone design experience which is offered in the senior year of your studies is designed based on “systems engineering” approach which is used in complex projects that are multidisciplinary (typical of biomedical projects). The students have a choice to team up with engineers from other fields including Mechanical, Electrical, and Ocean engineers.
  5. The students will be able to participate in an internship/co-op experience and while gaining work experience also secure 3-credits to replace a technical elective requirement.
  6. For those students that develop new technology during their research or capstone design experiences that have commercialization potential, we will provide resources for entrepreneurship and formation of companies through FAU’s ICORP program.

At FAU’s BME department, our goal is to offer a “total engineering education” that is grounded in important fundamentals, access to state of the art in technology, hands-on experiences, scientific research and reporting, and entrepreneurship.
