WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC UNIVERSITY

At Florida Atlantic’s College of Engineering and Computer Science, we are excited to introduce our new Biomedical Engineering Department. Our mission is to cultivate the next generation of well-prepared engineers and scientists. Our department offers five specialized undergraduate tracks:

  • Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials
  • Bio Robotics
  • Biomedical Devices and Smart Health
  • Bio-imaging
  • Bio-informatics

Our curriculum is designed to blend hands-on experiences with a solid theoretical foundation, keeping pace with state-of-the-art technology. Our faculty and research professors bring expertise from diverse fields, including biomedical devices, advanced robotics, tissue engineering, bio photonics, bio informatics, and orthopedics. They are deeply involved in cutting-edge research supported by prestigious agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), and Florida Department of Health (FDOH).

State-of-the-Art Facilities

Florida Atlantic has invested in new, fully equipped facilities to support our program, including:

  • A Biomedical Engineering Laboratory for a variety of hands-on courses.
  • An ISO-8 class “Clean Room” for micro device design and fabrication.
  • A Bio Robotics Laboratory with numerous modern robots.

Program Highlights

  • Tissue Engineering and Biomaterials Track: Ideal for those aiming to become R&D engineers in a lab setting or pursuing an MD degree.
  • Biomedical Devices and Smart Health and Bio Robotics Tracks: Designed for students interested in a 4+1 BS/MS in Artificial Intelligence (AI), unique to our department.
  • Research Course: Each track includes a research course for mastering key research tools and methods, culminating in a "research active" certificate upon graduation.
  • Capstone Design Experience: Focused on a “systems engineering” approach, allowing collaboration with Mechanical, Electrical, and Ocean engineers.
  • Internship/Co-op Experience: Offers practical work experience and 3-credit replacement for a technical elective.
  • Entrepreneurship Resources: Support for commercialization of new technologies through Florida Atlantic’s ICORP program.

Our goal is to offer a comprehensive engineering education grounded in fundamentals, access to cutting-edge technology, hands-on experience, scientific research, and entrepreneurship.
