Macie Barrett, a first-year doctoral student pursuing a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction within Florida Atlantic University’s College of Education, won the Florida Educational Research Association’s (FERA) Distinguished Teacher Inquiry Award for her presentation at FERA’s annual conference in Orlando, Fla., November 2024. Drawing on her experience as a high school educator, Barrett’s research explores how diverse and inclusive materials can create environments where students feel valued, build confidence, and are empowered to engage deeply with their learning. Barrett expressed that this award symbolizes not just the validation of months of dedicated research but also the affirmation of a belief she holds strongly: that culturally responsive teaching has the power to transform education.
