Background
Marsha Shapiro Rose is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology. Her primary research interests and publications have been directed at the connections between gender and wealth. Using an historical sociological approach, she has written about the Rockefeller women and other elites. Oftentimes, these privileged women remain subordinate to the privileged men in their lives. In response, some women established philanthropic organizations to exclusively benefit girls and women. Currently, there are 160 of these women’s funds in 30 countries. Dr. Rose’s work on this topic can be found in various journals and book chapters.
Teaching for Dr. Rose has always been her forte. She received an award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching as well as an award for Outstanding Service to FAU Students. Her undergraduate classes are in high demand, yet rigorous. Professor Rose instills a level of skepticism in her students and encourages them to explore their sociological imagination. Whether students enroll in Family and Society, Sociology of Education or another of Dr. Rose’s classes, students are regularly challenged and inspired.
At the graduate level, Professor Rose has concentrated on two foundational seminars, Sociology of the Family and Sociology of Education. The seminars are designed to strengthen students’ writing skills along with their analytical development and critical thinking tools. Students are encouraged to prepare their research papers with a view toward presentation at professional meetings.
