The GBCT award honors Gordon Bazemore, Florida Atlantic’s most preeminent criminologist and lifelong champion of restorative justice. The award is sponsored by FAU’s Center for Peace, Justice, & Human Rights, and provides travel funds for the student who produces a Capstone that addresses an important gap in criminological research, generates new knowledge in the area of peace, justice, and/or human rights, and is most ready for professional dissemination as determined by Capstone faculty.

This award expands the respective research impacts of Florida Atlantic, the College of Social Work and Criminal Justice, and the Center for Peace, Justice and Human Rights nationally and internationally by encouraging graduate students to present their original empirical research at academic, professional, and government conferences and meetings.

This year's recipient is Alice Assi, MSCCJ Candidate. The title of her paper is, “The impact of ethnicity and generational status on immigrant drug use: A scoping review." Alice will present her work at the annual meeting of the Western Society of Criminology in Seattle WA in February of 2025.

Alice is a driven Master’s student at Florida Atlantic, with research interests in immigration, drug use and juvenile justice. Her upcoming master’s thesis will explore the immigrant paradox from an inside perspective and with a focus on drug usage across different immigrant generations, which reflects her deep commitment to understanding and addressing the complexities of immigrant experiences in contemporary America.
