Tuesday, Apr 26, 2022
PJHR's signature spring event took place on April 19. "Defending Women's Human Rights: An Evening with Mahnaz Afkhami" highlighted the issue of women's human rights through a conversation between PJHR Director Kelly Shannon and Mahnaz Afkhami, former Minister for Women's Affairs of Iran and current Founder, President, and CEO of the international non-governmental organization Women's Learning Partnership.
Students, faculty, staff, and interested community members gathered in the University Theatre for a lively discussion about Afkhami's life's work as a defender of women's human rights. Afkhami especially stressed the need for dialogue across differences and community organizing as important tactics for advancing women's rights globally. The event was followed by a VIP reception in the Sculpture Gallery.
The following day, April 20, Ms. Afkhami visited Prof. Shannon's "History of Human Rights" upper-division undergraduate course and spoke with the students about doing human rights work
