Eileen Ariza

Dr. Eileen N. Whelan Ariza is a professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, and the ESOL Coordinator for the College of Education. She received her Ed.D. in multilingual/multicultural education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and her expertise is preparing in service and preservice teachers of English learners, with a current focus on teachers of refugees. She is a two-time Core Fulbright Scholar to Mexico and Costa Rica, and was invited to serve as Fulbright Alumni Ambassador for the 2013-2015 term. Throughout her career, Dr. Ariza has won multiple awards in recognition of her teaching (e.g. FAU College of Education Distinguished Teacher of the Year, 2002-03; the FAU University Distinguished Teacher of the Year, 2002-03; FAU COE Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching, 2003; Harvard University Excellence in Teaching, 1996; Worcester State University, Distinguished Alumni Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Education 2006.) Dr. Ariza has authored and co-authored 14 popular books, and 45 peer reviewed publications that relate to teaching English learners in the United States and abroad. Her forthcoming research is on the issues of bilingual Maltese teachers of refugee children.
