Research – My previous focus had been on international, communication, new information technology and media theory in which I produced two books (a monograph and edited volume) and a number of articles. At FAU I changed my focus to that of sexuality, gender and the media and I was among the first generation of scholars to publish in the area of sexuality and the media. My 1992 article "Invisibility, Homophobia, Heterosexism: Lesbians, Gays and the Media," (co-authored with my then graduate student Kevin Petrich) received the 1994 Outstanding Published Article Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language and Gender. I published a number of articles, book chapters and the 2008 single authored volume "Gay Rights and Moral Panic" which was a study of the role of the media in 1977 gay rights referendum in Miami. My research for the book was used to help create the recent PBS documentary "The Day It Snowed in Miami.," a history of the gay rights struggle in Maimi-Dade county from 1977-2002. In 2013 I was received the "Roy F. Aarons Award" from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (one of the largest communication academic professional organizations) for my contribution to LGBT media scholarship. My current work involves a long term oral history project of the LGBTQ community in South Florida done in conjunction with the community based Stonewall Library and Archives. I am also working with Professor Miguel Kanai of the Geography Department at the University of Miami to write a proposal for funding on the topic of "Media, Sexuality and Gentrification: The Case of South Miami Beach."
