The goal of my research, teaching, and practice is to improve the care and quality of life of underserved and vulnerable populations, particularly older adults. Ageism in healthcare is unintentionally demonstrated in practice and institutionalized by the lack of core geriatric competencies in education and healthcare delivery. My work with diverse, vulnerable populations at federally designated safety net hospitals has helped me to be acutely aware of intersection of ageism and the unmet healthcare needs of older adults. I have developed interprofessional geriatric educational programs in healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and engaged community partners to improve the care of older adults. My research is focused on interventions to promote health and cognition in older adults, family caregivers coping with dementia and delirium, and translational research.
