by Polly Burks | Friday, Sep 13, 2019The University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University will present a “trifecta” of faculty art exhibitions. The first to open will be the “Biennial Faculty Exhibition,” presented in the Schmidt Gallery from Saturday, Sept.14 through Saturday, Oct. 26. The “New Art Faculty” will be presented in the Ritter Art Gallery from Friday, Sept. 20 through Saturday, Nov. 2, with an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. The final part of the faculty art exhibition will feature an immersive multi-media performance installation titled “Polysemic: An Exploration of Perception” on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. The exhibitions are located at FAU’s Boca Raton Campus at 777 Glades Road. All events are free and open to the public.
The “Biennial Faculty Exhibition” features the work of more than 20 FAU faculty members who continue their practice as producing professional artists. Participating artists include faculty from FAU’s Department of Visual Arts and Art History and the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters; the School of Architecture in the College for Design and Social Inquiry; the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College; and FAU Libraries. The exhibition presents works in a variety of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, photography and digital media.
The “New Art Faculty Exhibition” presents five faculty members who recently joined FAU as tenure track faculty. The exhibition allows each artist to exhibit several works to introduce their visual art to art students, the University community, visual arts audience in the region and the general public. It features four artists from FAU’s Department of Visual Arts and Art History including painter Corey Lamb; printmaker Joseph Valasquez; graphic designer and multi-media artist Mehrdad Sedaghat; ceramic sculptor Thomas Stollar; and painter and animator “Topher” Maraffi who teaches in FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies.
The third faculty art exhibition, “Polysemic,” was developed by Matthew Baltrucki, assistant professor of music. It is an interactive, multidisciplinary live performance sound installation and recording event. The exhibition will feature musical artist, Kyle Motl, a music producer/recording engineer, Baltrucki, and visual artist, Carlos Dominguez, collaboratively exploring the nature of the perceptual distinction between live and recorded music as well as the role of the record producer in the aesthetics of sound reproduction.
The University Galleries are open Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. The Schmidt Center Gallery is located in the Performing Arts building (building 51), near the Living Room Theaters.
The “trifecta” of faculty art exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Department of Visual Arts and Art History. This is the twelfth iteration of this exhibition and furthers the University Galleries mission to promote the complex world of the arts and the professional artistic practices at FAU.
