Joseph Choma receives the 2023 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence
Tuesday, Nov 07, 2023Joseph Choma, Director of FAU’s School of Architecture, is the recipient of the 2023 ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence. ACADIA is the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture and was founded in 1981. The organization is committed to the research and development of computer aids that enhance design creativity, rather than simply production, and that aim at contributing to the construction of humane physical environments.
The ACADIA awards are internationally recognized as one of the highest honors in the field. This award recognizes innovative research that contributes to the field of computational design in architecture. The award distinguishes research with the potential to transform contemporary practice. From the jury’s citation:
“This award recognizes the significant contribution of Joseph Choma to the field of computational design and digital fabrication research. His rigorous and captivating work spanning the areas of expertise in computational materials, fabrication, manufacturing, and design continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in architecture and design.”
Recent past recipients of the ACADIA Innovative Research Award of Excellence include: Felecia Davis at Pennsylvania State University (2022), Caitlin Mueller at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2021), Sean Ahlquist at University of Michigan (2020), and Jose Sanchez at University of Michigan (2019).
In addition to the innovative research award, ACADIA also recognizes excellence in design, teaching, digital practice, and leadership. The recipient of the 2023 ACADIA Design Excellence Award is Odile Decq of Studio Odile Decq based in Paris, France. The 2023 ACADIA Teaching Award of Excellence was awarded to Terry Knight, the William and Emma Rogers Professor of Design and Computation in the Department of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The 2023 ACADIA Digital Practice Award of Excellence was awarded to Nader Tehrani, Principal of NADAAA and Professor of Architecture at The Cooper Union. The recipient of the 2023 ACADIA Society Award for Leadership is Kathy Velikov, Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Creative Practice at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
The awards ceremonies took place in person on October 26-28, 2023 at the University of Colorado Denver during the 2023 ACADIA International Conference, titled “Habits of the Anthropocene.”
