Heather Coltman has performed extensively as a solo and collaborative musician throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, South Africa and Greece. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas, a Master of Music degree from the Mannes College of Music in New York and Bachelor of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Her principal teachers include Lita Guerra, Claude Frank, David Bar-Illan and Nadia Boulanger. She made her debut in her native country of Zambia at the age of five, and emigrated to the United States in 1966. Among the many competitions in which she has received top awards are the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition and the Geza Anda International Piano Competition. In addition, she won the Outstanding Accompanist Award in both the Corpus Christi Young Artists Competition and the Emanuel Feurmann International Cello Competition. She has served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, the Austin Chamber Music Center and the Birmingham-Southern Conservatory. Comfortable on the stage as a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed in concert throughout Europe, South Africa and the United States. Her recordings can be heard on Heng Hao Records and the Lyra Productions label. She was recently appointed currently Chair of the Department of Music at Florida Atlantic University, where she is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Keyboard Studies. She received an Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching from that institution in 1998.
Heather Coltman's performances and lectures offer her audiences unique insights into the creative world of the musician. Her rare intelligence and warm, vibrant personality display a mind that is keen, probing and sensitive. Passionately dedicated to music education for students of all ages, she has developed numerous highly successful approaches to music education. The Founder and Director of Teaching Outstanding PerformerS (TOPS) Piano Camps, she is committed to enriching the lives of young Floridians through their encounters with the arts. As a lecturer for FAU's Lifelong Learning Society, and for various community and civic events, she is able to illuminate the importance of music within our world, and its importance as a means of communication among all peoples. Through her active lecture, teaching, performance and recording schedule, she is a persuasive advocate for arts education and a compelling ambassador for FAU.
