Admissions Requirements
A student seeking admission into a graduate program in Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature should meet the following minimum requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in the proposed field from an accredited institution.
- A minimum 3.0 grade point average (GPA) for the last 60 undergraduate hours completed and/or a combined score of 1000 or higher on the verbal and analytical sections of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE).
- Two letters of recommendation from former professors or other qualified individuals who can evaluate a candidate's past academic success and potential for graduate study.
- A two-to-three-page typed, double-spaced, autobiographical statement indicating the nature of their preparation for graduate work and the reasons for seeking the M.A. in the proposed field.
- A writing sample (a formal research paper, in the language of the proposed field or in a topic on linguistics or related field).
Prospective applicants for graduate work in Languages, Linguistics, and Comparative Literature are encouraged to schedule an interview (by phone for out-of-town/state candidates) with the department's director of graduate studies and with the head of the individual program (Spanish, French, etc.).
Applicants who lack a strong background (i.e., an undergraduate major) in a proposed field, may take undergraduate pre-requisites and/or be admitted on a conditional basis.
