Global Studies Checklist

Pre-Requisites at the Intellectual Foundations Program level:

While completing the University degree requirements, students must take:

  1. In Foundations of Written Communication: ENC 1101 or equivalent; and either ANT1471 or ENC 1930 or equivalent. Students should receive at least an B+ for each of these two classes.
  2. In Foundations of Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning : STA 2023 for which students should receive a B at least.
  3. In Foundations of Society and Human Behavior: ECO 2013 Macroeconomics for which students should receive a B+ at least.

Recommended courses in the Intellectual Foundations Program: ESC 2000 The Blue Planet; EVR 1001 Environmental Science and Sustainability; BSC 1011 Biodiversity; EVR 2017 Environment and Society; MET 2010 Weather and Climate; GLY 2100 History of the Earth and Life; ECP 2002 Contemporary Economic Issues; SYD 2790 Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality; SYD 2010 Social Problems.

 

Global Studies Major

  1. Required core courses for the Major: 4 Courses AND Foreign Language (20 credits)
    • IDS 3313 Global Studies I (team-taught by 2 professors)
    • IDS 4314 Global Studies II (team-taught by 2 professors)
    • IDS 4332 Cultural Studies of Globality (team-taught by 2 professors)
    • FOL 3880 Research & Bibliographic Methods
    • 2 Language courses at the intermediate level (students proficient in a second language should contact the program coordinator)
  1. Also Required (9 credits).
    •  Experiential Learning: Study Abroad, Model United Nations, or internship in selected companies or NGOs (6 credits) .

      Students who do not choose the Study Abroad or the Model United Nations option have to complete 6 credits in internships (two internships: preferably one with a local scope and the other with a global scope). Students are encouraged to choose among the various options listed below (other opportunities can be discussed with their advisors)

    • Research: Capstone IDS 4915 (3 credits): research project that should meet the definition posted on OURI’s website: “An inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline or practice."   1. Electives (5 courses = 15 credits) Students must take 5 elective courses in 3 different areas (see below). Three of the 5 courses must be from the same area. The remaining 2 courses must be from 2 different areas. In addition, because this is an interdisciplinary degree, no more than 3 courses at the 3000-4000 level can be taken from the same department.
