Visit the Everglades Correctional Institution on 4/27 with the PJHR Working Group on Race and Mass Incarceration

Visit the Everglades Correctional Institution on April 27th with FAU's Center for Peace, Justice, and Human Rights Working Group on Race and Mass Incarceration

Visit a Prison

The Center for Peace, Justice and Human Rights Working Group on Race and Mass Incarceration invites you to join us for a visit to Everglades Correctional Institution on Monday, April 17 from 1:00-4:00. Our visit will be hosted by Exchange for Change, a Miami-based prison writing organization, and the Frederick Douglass Project for Justice, which seeks to change the public’s perception of the criminal justice system by becoming proximate with the humanity of incarcerated people. Our small group will participate in a special session with residents of Everglades CI, in which we will discuss the events and research in our Faculty Working Group, hear from Everglades CI students about their ongoing participation in Exchange for Change (and hopefully hear and read selections of their writing), as well as hear about the experiences of Everglades CI residents in their inaugural partnership with the Frederick Douglass Project.

This event has a limited capacity- register by Friday 4/7 to reserve a spot!

Participation Requirements:

  • Everglades Correctional Institution is about 75 minutes from FAU (give or take traffic); if you are leaving from/returning to FAU you should block off 11:00-6:00 to be safe.
  • You must register in advance for this event in order to be approved. You will need to provide a driver’s license number or State ID for the Department of Corrections approval- they will perform a background check.

Registration Directions:

  • Follow this link to Exchange for Change’s website in order to register.
    • Note: There is a box to indicate if you do not have a driver’s license; a State ID is an approved substitute, it just doesn’t say that on the form
  • List FAU as your organization
  • Select Everglades Correctional Institution from the list of facilities
  • Note: 4/17 is not a visit option currently listed on the calendar- that’s ok! They have reserved this date especially for us. You don’t need to identify the date when you fill out the form; just list FAU as your organization, and note 4/17 in that blank if you wish
  • Once you register, you will receive a training video from the Frederick Douglass Project and a form to complete for the Department of Corrections
