Call for Submissions—Coastlines, FAU's Undergraduate Literary Magazine

Thursday, Oct 14, 2021
Coastlines submissions are currently OPEN for our 2022 issue.
Submission Deadline: November 5, 2021.

Established in 1970, Coastlines is Florida Atlantic University’s annual undergraduate literary magazine. We are dedicated to showcasing works of fiction, poetry, nonfiction, translation, multigenre work, and visual art from our diverse community of writers and artists. Coastlines is proud to offer a space for FAU’s writers to become the next wave of creative voices.

General Guidelines

We ask that the work you contribute be inventive, expansive, and surprising. We ultimately hope to break open linguistic possibilities, expose vulnerabilities, and challenge dominant systems of thought by presenting nuance.

All text submissions must have numbered pages and be in 12pt Times New Roman font as a Word document (except where noted otherwise). In sending your work to us, you claim your work as original and previously unpublished. We welcome simultaneous submissions (your work may be considered elsewhere while it is under our review) as long as you contact us immediately if acceptance is found elsewhere. The work must be finished. We do not accept work that is hateful, racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, or ableist.

Poetry

We are calling for poetry that engages the senses while amplifying the voices of FAU’s diverse student body and reflecting the distinct crises of this moment. All forms are welcome. Please submit up to 5 poems.

Fiction

We are looking for ambitious work in all genres of fiction, including experimental work. Feel free to submit up to three works. Suggested length: up to 5,000 words.

Non-Fiction

As Dr. Kate Schmitt says, non-fiction submissions should engage readers by “moving from the personal (private) experience to the universal.” We challenge the misconception that nonfiction writing is boring; successful submissions will be captivating lyric essays, flash nonfiction, experimental nonfiction, or personal essays. Suggested length: up to 5,000 words.

Visual Art and Graphic Narrative

In addition to prose and poetry, Coastlines is committed to publishing visual art that adds layers of meaning to the magazine as a whole, including but not limited to:painting, drawing, illustration, mixed media, photography, digital art, and comics. We accept submissions in the following file formats: .jpg, .tiff., .png, .gif, or rtf, .txt, .doc, .docx. We will accept up to five pieces of visual art and graphic narratives up to ten pages long.
