Assistant professor, Shermeen Yousif, Ph.D.

As a community outreach activity, Shermeen Yousif, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the School of Architecture FAU, has received as a CO-PI the Community Foundation of Broward grant titled: “Broward Climate Resilience Stewardship: Empowering Communities to Overcome Flood Risks and Energy Challenges”, in collaboration with Dr. Daniel Meerof (PI), Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatics Engineering FAU, and Dr. Colin Polsky (CO-PI) Professor of Geosciences and Director of the Florida Center for Environmental Studies, FAU.

According to Dr. Yousif, “the one-year grant is a pilot study with the objectives to help coastal Broward County communities improve flood management, and to improve resilience literacy so that homeowners become empowered and actively involved in advancing their own neighborhood-level resilience on a sustained basis”. As part of the grant activities, Dr. Yousif has presented (with Dr. Meerof) the second educational module titled: “Energy Conservation: How to cost-effectively reduce residential energy consumption without sacrificing quality of life”. Attendees of the educational modules series receive certificates, and from those, selected community members will be appointed as stewards, ambassadors who will help identify other active community volunteers, identify projects to measurably improve neighborhood resiliency/energy conservation, work to obtain resources for implementation, with technical assistance provided by the FAU project team, and report results as part of Module 3 Resiliency Outcomes Spring 2021.
