Concealed Carry On Campus Bill - Update

This week, the House (HB 4005) and Senate (SB 176) versions of the Licenses to Carry Concealed Weapons or Firearms bill were heard in their respective chamber’s Higher Education Committees. On Monday, a number of the SUS police chiefs were invited to testify and appear before the Senate Higher Education Committee by Sen. Arthenia Joyner. A majority of the chiefs, including Chief Lowe, appeared before the committee and provided testimony or submitted appearance cards in opposition to the proposed legislation. After lengthy testimony and debate on both sides of the issue, the measure was ultimately passed by a party-line vote of 6-3 and reported favorably out of committee. The bill now moves onto the Judiciary Committee and then to Rules before heading to the Floor.

Today, the House Higher Education Subcommittee considered its version of the bill. A number of the SUS chief were again in attendance, this time at the request of Rep. Dave Kerner. The measure was passed by even larger margin (I believe 10 to 2) and reported favorably out of committee. The bill has one more stop at Judiciary before heading to the House Floor. At the moment, it does not appear anything or anyone with stop the progression of these bills. Barring any unforeseen circumstances or opposition, it is likely that this will become law this year.
