Boca Raton Campus Consultants:

Hello, fellow students. I have broad interdisciplinary experience in the social sciences, including a masters in communication, and a doctorate in sociology from Boston University. So I welcome anyone working both on beginning and advanced projects in any of the social sciences. In addition to scholarly research, I have also written fiction, poetry, and screen and stage plays (and even written a song or two!). But my first love (well, aside from my family) is barber shop harmony. I could sing it all day. I hope to work with you soon.

Greetings writers!  My name is Beth and it would be my pleasure to help you with your writing needs.  My goal as a consultant is to help take away the anxiety, stress, and confusion that college students often feel when writing papers and replace that with understanding, new writing skills, and confidence.  I not only want to help you write a great paper, I want to assist you in becoming a competent, skilled, and confident writer and to make the writing process fun and enjoyable.  Together, we can work through every stage of the writing process – understanding the prompt, brainstorming ideas, creating an outline, working on the rough draft, and polishing up your final copy.  My area of expertise includes APA and MLA style, research papers, ENC 1101 and 1102 essays, resumes, cover letters, and personal statements.  I hold bachelor degrees in social work and psychology, and I am presently working towards my masters in social work.  My academic experience includes work as a research assistant on two published psychology research projects, and a position on a peer review panel headed by the editor of a major psychology journal.  In my professional career, I have worked as a behavioral therapist for children and adults with autism spectrum disorders and the coordinator of a program for children with special needs.  I enjoy working with diverse groups of people with varying degrees of writing experience and I would be delighted to help set you up for success!

FREE KITTENS!!!  Assuming that I have your attention, let's all agree that writing can be a very difficult and laborious process.  Don't know what laborious means?  Come see me.  The point is that writing can be rewarding (and even fun) once you know what to do!  I specialize in first and second year writing and use a variety of approaches aimed at helping you develop what it is that you want to say. I welcome any discipline and every writing style.  Whether it's a problem understanding the assignment, how to organize your thoughts, or where to find meaningful support - I can help you.

Chris R.

My name is Chris Ross, not to be confused with Christopher who offers free kittens. I'm a recent graduate from FAU. I graduated with an English degree with a focus in writing and rhetoric as well as creative writing. I also have a background in journalism and I am familiar with news-style writing. Fiction, creative nonfiction, and news articles are my specialties, but I'm also good at generating ideas and being able to write in MLA format.

What it do!? I mean, Greetings! My name’s Christian, and I specialize in long walks on the beach, and being a lifelong student of the writing and composition process. A majority of my experience lies in the English literature, and Sociological fields, but I’d love to work with you in any other area. I’m familiar with struggling during the writing process, and I’m here to help you with everything from brain-storming and pre-writing, to thesis development, and content organization. I can be quite friendly, and happy, so if that’s right up your ally, we’d work well together. Hope to see you soon!

I have always had a passion for writing from a young age.  I graduated with a BA in English and a BA in Criminal Justice, a Minor in Sociology, and a Concentration in American Literature.  I focused a great deal of my studies on improving my writing skills, and would like to now help you improve yours.  As a former student, I understand the difficulties students face when they receive that essay prompt or assignment and just do not know where to begin.  Sometimes sitting down, talking about it and hearing your thoughts aloud can help significantly, so I am here to listen and offer insight for your needs.  I am very familiar with MLA style and am willing to help you in any stage of the writing process.  Whether it is from organizing your train of thought, to crafting your thesis, or finalizing your conclusion, I look forward to assisting you.

I would love to help you with any stage of the writing process! If you are having trouble deciphering a reading, struggling with understanding a paper prompt, blanking on what to write, or are agonizing over drafting or grammar issues, please feel free to schedule an appointment with me! I greatly enjoy discussing class readings as well as dissecting poetry and prose from both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I am very comfortable with all genres of literature as well as a variety of other areas of concentration, such as psychology, sociology, criminology, classics, women's studies, anthropology, law, philosophy and rhetoric, and history. I also LOVE grammar, so if you are a second language student who would like clarification or support in this area, drop on by! Finally, when it comes to format and citation, I can help you with MLA, APA, ASA, Chicago or Turabian, and California. You can either sign-up for an online appointment or come see me in person at the writing center. See you soon!

Howdy, howdy and bonjour! I’m Heather and I have a B.A. in English and am a Master-level certified writing consultant. A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was a math major, but I learned that I am happiest when I am in the realm of letters that aren’t variables. I also love words (my husband says I use them with the precision of a surgeon), and I love finding patterns in words. I love poetry, I love grammar, and I love my job here at the UCEW. I love researching information so if I don’t know something you ask me, I will sure find out because I’m a resourceful gal. I also love laughter, so come on in and let’s laugh and learn together.

I specialize in writing for the social sciences as well as in English, literature and poetry. I can assist you in any part of the writing process, and am willing to work you on writing ventures of any length—whether it’s just one paragraph or one-hundred pages. I am especially proficient in grammar, sentence-structuring and use of words. I have experience with APA, MLA and Chicago style formats. I am also conversational in French and Spanish, and can work with you in these languages. Please do not hesitate to make an appointment with me. I am a graduate student in the political science department, with a B.A. in anthropology, a certificate in ethnic studies and an A.A. in literature.

Hey! How are you?  If you have made it this far down the list, I am impressed.  As far as consulting goes, I am very capable in many areas. In particular, I am an English major who is phenomenal at writing papers and is just as capable at helping you with yours.  I have experience ranging from literary analysis to philosophy—and that is all before I worked at a long-standing job writing news articles.  Whether you need help with issues like essay construction and thesis development, or any of the many smaller things that you need for your work, I can absolutely help you.

Why is writing so difficult?  As writers we often do not know where to start and we can feel lost and confused.  I can help you with the various areas in the writing process.  Bring in your prompt, materials, and let’s get started!  I am familiar with various brainstorming and prewriting techniques which will help you formulate your ideas.  Additionally, I am a stickler for a good thesis statement.  I enjoy working through the thesis writing process to create a well-developed statement for your paper. Furthermore, I have experience in writing within history and am very familiar with primary sources, historical texts, and Chicago citation.  I encourage you to come in and see what the UCEW can assist you with!

I specialize in English, Creative Writing, and Literature. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing and can help you with any step in your creative process. I have also taught ENC 1101 and 1102 and have thorough knowledge of MLA format. I am happy to help you with any assignment or project you are working on. No matter what stage you are at in your writing process, I am confident I can help you take the steps to becoming a better writer. So come, meet with me, and let’s talk writing.

If you are an adult student returning to school after a hiatus in college work, you may feel challenged because of new technologies and computer and research literacies. I’d like to help you feel confident with your writing using these tools. Writing is more than spelling, grammar and style. It involves negotiating technology and the ability to ferret out valid information. I like working with graduate students who need research skills using databases, higher level vocabulary usage and library information technology. Most of the sciences are required to use the APA style guide. Style guide skills are essential to publishing which masters and PhD students will want to accomplish. My other specialties are with students who speak English as a second language, and students who need to incorporate graphics, charts, or images in their PowerPoint or MSWord documents, If you intend to go to graduate or professional school, I can help you write your personal statement to medical, dental or veterinary school to sound authentic and conform to what the specific institution requires. My background is in medical, biological and social science, anthropology, film. and women's studies. I can help you with APA, MLA, Chicago and any other style guide citations and references.

Hello all! I have a passion for the arts and a deep admiration for writing. I hold a BA in English and I am in the process of getting a MA in English, right here at Florida Atlantic University. Having specialized in writing and composition during my undergraduate years, I am ready and willing to assist you through any writing stage. This includes developing and clarifying ideas, understanding an assignment, pinpointing areas that need emphasis, detecting grammatical errors...anything! Being a teacher's assistant for first-year writers, I am familiar with the prompts and assignments given for general education writing courses as well as many of the higher-level composition classes you may be taking. That means I am ready to offer you tips and tricks on how to create a well-developed paper and help you feel confident as a writer. My goal is to make the writing process as fun as possible, so let's get to it! Hope to see you in the center!

Lyam has been a Reading Learning Specialist for over 9 years.  He’s also a published author, and he has extensive experience  with demons.  Yes, demons, those invisible habits that live inside you, possess you, and make you produce both bad and good writing without you appearing to have any say in the matter.  Let’s unearth them and put them to work in ways that work for you.  Sure, the paper in front of you is important, but the habits that you’ve got embedded in your writing process are even more interesting.

My background is in English and Psychology. I have experience with the MLA and the APA format, as well as the creative writing process. As a participant in several writing workshops, I have always enjoyed collaborating with my peers – and now, I’m here to collaborate with you, on anything from brainstorming to perfecting the final draft.

"Blood, Sweat, and Tears"- definition: 1) the name of a late 60s jazz-rock band known for its brass and guitar instrumentals 2) the bodily fluids excreted by most writers, especially by students working on class papers.

Hi. I'm Pat and have twenty-five years experience teaching writing and literature courses at the university level. I've also worked as a technical writer, a grant proposal application writer, and an editorial consultant, so I feel comfortable working with almost any paper topic at any point in the writing process. Remember, if you brainstorm and pre-write, there will be less blood; if you draft, less sweat; and if you revise, fewer tears. I'm a detail-oriented person, so I really enjoy working with grammar and mechanics, sentence structure, MLA and APA styles, business writing projects, resumes, and application letters and essays. By the way, the band "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" is still touring worldwide. Come to the UCEW and get rid of your blood, sweat, and tears.

I am passionate about helping you find your voice! During each writing consultation, I seek to meet your needs as a writer and to empower you to more clearly formulate and effectively express your ideas. Undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and staff are more than welcome to meet with me; however, as a PhD candidate, I may be a particularly suitable choice for graduate students. I can help with any aspect of the writing process, including, but not limited to, thesis development, organization, and grammar. I can advise you about Chicago/Turabian, MLA, and the basics of APA styles. I am currently in FAU's Public Intellectuals Program, writing my dissertation about the transgender politics in contemporary U.S. science fiction television. I have degrees and certifications in Communication;  Religious Studies; and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. My published writings explore religion, poverty, and LGBTQ politics. In addition, I have delivered or facilitated over sixty invited lectures, panel presentations, and workshops.

Hello there. My name is Rick and I am a graduate student working on a Masters degree in Experimental Psychology.  I received my undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Psychology from Tulane University. My background makes me well suited to help with philosophy papers and research papers in the sciences, however I am happy to help students with any subject.  I believe that I can be particularly helpful with students that are struggling with formulating a thesis, have unfocused and/or disorganized papers, or that need help strengthening their argument.  I also enjoy brainstorming with students who feel stuck and want to uncover new perspectives.
Volrick (also works in Davie)

I enjoy de-mystifying the writing process for those who feel overwhelmed by an assignment. I am eager to assist with all aspects of the writing process from pre-writing and generating ideas to thesis writing and draft revisions. I find that my background in communication allows me to understand and relate to many different assignments across various disciplines. I specialize in rhetorical analyses, criticisms, and argumentation.  Some specific courses I may be extremely helpful with are: Intro to Communication, Classical Rhetoric, Contemporary Rhetoric, Rhetorical Criticism, just to name a few.

  Davie Campus Consultants:

I believe in creating a comfortable work environment where a student feels free to ask the questions and get the answers they need in order to become a successful writer.  My job is to demystify the writing process by breaking it down into steps a student can understand and implement.   I am proficient in either MLA or APA formatting.  Sessions can include brainstorming to generate a thesis and paragraph topics or working to learn the rules of grammar and punctuation.  Writing is a process; the more you practice, the better you will be!

If you're feeling overwhelmed by an assignment--no matter where you are in the writing process--I can help. I am happy to help you find a thesis statement that fits your goal and to help you organize your thoughts so that your writing becomes more effective. I welcome writers that would like help with APA, MLA, and Chicago style formats.

 Michelle (also works in Boca)

Hi, my name is Michelle. I did my undergrad in English here at FAU. I am currently working on an MA in English literature and am teaching ENC 1101. In addition, I was a high school writing teacher for ten years, working with students on all levels including students with learning disabilities. I would be happy to help you with any step of the writing process. If you need help understanding a reading or cannot quite form an argument, make an appointment, and I will help you get started. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is start. Even if you are well on your way to writing that "A" paper, come in, and let me be a second set of eyes for you. I can help you identify patterns of error so that you can learn to proof read your own work. Stop by and take advantage of the UCEW; all of us are here to support you.

Jupiter Campus Consultants:

My name is Maria. My BA is in English with a minor in Spanish and religious studies. I am currently an MFA student in Creative Writing. I specialize in poetry and have a knack for grammar. I have experience working in poetry and nonfiction Creative Writing workshops, so I am more than happy to work with aspiring writers (as well as writers who are just trying to make it through ENC 1101). In addition to my Creative Writing/English specializations, I also have an interest in philosophy and psychology. I am familiar with both MLA and APA styles, but am more comfortable with MLA. I am willing to help with any assignment but am most enthused to help with understanding assignments, arguments, analysis, proofreading strategies, and creative writing assignments. I have worked for over a year at Palm Beach State College with students of all stages of learning development—from prep to honors—so, if you feel behind in your writing game, no worries; the UCEW is here to help.

My name is Mumbi Ngugi. I'm a junior concentrating in Women's Studies and Spanish at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University! While I go to school here in Jupiter, I am actually from Irvine, California. I love all things related to law, literature, philosophy, theory, history, books and ideas in general. While I am more comfortable working within the realm of the aforementioned topics (however broadly stated), I also believe the lines which separate academic disciplines are all too often artificial! I mean, look at two of the greatest Western philosophers in the history of ideas, Plato and Immanuel Kant. The former was also a geometrician, and the latter a physicist! What I am really trying to say is that I am open and excited to help you with whatever your writing concerns are, in whatever discipline they appear, in whatever language you prefer (so long as it's English or Spanish)!
