FAU’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities to Host Fourth Annual ‘Wings of Hope’ Charity Reception

Event to Honor FAU Benefactors Fran and Joe Eppy

BOCA RATON, Fla. (January 23, 2013) – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) will host the fourth annual “Wings of Hope” charity reception on Thursday, February 28 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Boca Raton Museum, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. All proceeds will benefit CARD, which provides free professional consultation, support and training to families and individuals affected by autism spectrum disorders.

The event will honor Joe and Fran Eppy of Boca Raton, for their longstanding support and dedication to FAU CARD and the autism community.

“FAU CARD provides essential services to more than 2,900 families in the region,” said Jack Scott, Ph.D., BCBA, executive director of CARD. “This year more than ever, I want to urge all those who care about people affected by autism to attend our Wings of Hope event.”

The theme of this year’s event is “CARD-i-gras.” Guests will enjoy a Mardi Gras celebration with hors d’oeuvres, open bar, music, silent auction and raffle. Tickets for the event are $150 per couple or $75 per person. Event sponsors are First Capital and Glen and Tricia Stein.

Housed in the College of Education, FAU CARD serves as a multidisciplinary learning laboratory for members of the community including FAU undergraduate and graduate students. One of seven such centers in the state, CARD currently serves more than 2,900 registered clients, most diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum disorders such as Asperger syndrome, pervasive development disorder not otherwise specified, Rett syndrome and childhood disintegrative disorder. FAU CARD acts as a clearinghouse of information, and its services and programs reflect a strong belief in early intervention. The focus of FAU CARD is to optimize the potential of people with autism and related disabilities by enabling them to learn, work, communicate and socialize in the community.

In addition to locations in Boca Raton and the Treasure Coast, CARD’s specially equipped van serves as a mobile assessment clinic by bringing FAU CARD professionals to various locations to provide free screenings to children, ages 18 months to 5 years old, who present signs of autism and other developmental disabilities. Service area includes Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Indian River counties.
