FAU’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Receives $750,000 from the Quantum Foundation

BOCA RATON, FL (November 1, 2011) – The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University recently received $750,000 in grant funding from the Quantum Foundation of West Palm Beach. The Quantum Foundation has a vision of creating a Palm Beach County where everyone has the opportunity to live healthy lives regardless of their income, education or background.

“On behalf of everyone at FAU, I would like to thank the Quantum Foundation for this generous grant,” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. “The Quantum Foundation has provided a tremendous amount of support to FAU over the years, and we truly appreciate this contribution to our new medical school.”

The grant will be used to support graduate medical education, community health center research and service partnerships, and a healthcare careers outreach program. The Quantum Foundation also has provided grants for FAU’s College of Education and the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

“Our mission is to improve health care access, science and health education, and to enhance the health care workforce in our community,” said Quantum Foundation President Kerry Diaz. “So this grant aligns with our efforts in each of these areas.”

The Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine, the first medical school at a public university in Palm Beach County, welcomed its first class of 64 future physicians in August 2011. The innovative curriculum features early and continuous community-based clinical experiences and problem-based learning with emphasis on small-group and self-directed learning. The College’s world-class faculty provides a student-centered and patient-focused approach that includes clinical experiences with local physicians, health departments and hospitals, and a state-of-the-art clinical skills simulation center.
