FAU to Honor Youngest Graduate in School History

BOCA RATON, Fla. (October 21, 2013) –  The Florida Atlantic University Alumni Association will honor Edith “Edie” Stern ’68 with the Alumni Talon Award as the youngest graduate in the history of FAU. A current resident of Yorktown Heights, N.Y., Stern will accept the award in-person at the annual Talon Leadership Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Marleen and Harold Forkas Alumni Center, Boca Raton campus.

Stern began attending junior college when she was 12 years old, and received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from FAU at the age of 15 in 1968. A child prodigy, Stern was raised to focus strictly on her studies by her father, Aaron Stern, a Holocaust survivor. Unable to work due to illness, he made it his mission to educate her. Immediately after graduating from FAU, Stern went on to receive a master’s degree in mathematics from Michigan State University and then began working for IBM.

“FAU really took a chance on me. I was young and hadn’t been away from home before for any extended period of time,” said Stern. “I made good friends that I’m still in touch with, and learned the blinding beauty that mathematics can be. The education I received at FAU prepared me well for graduate school and for a career in technology. For this I’m very grateful.”

An “IBMer” for more than 40 years, Stern is a distinguished engineer, responsible for architecture of the Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus event management software and leading the work on leveraging analytics for operations. Her previous experience includes managing a team pioneering the use of remote healthcare monitoring for the elderly and researching broadband imaging input for mobile devices.

Stern is a master inventor and has been issued 126 U.S. patents with many more pending. In 2012, she received the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Kate Gleason Award for lifetime achievement in the engineering profession.

The Talon Leadership Awards ceremony was established in 1997 and is co-sponsored by the FAU Alumni Association and the FAU Student Government Homecoming Committee. It unites alumni, students, campus and community leaders in a celebration of leadership, support and service to FAU. The Talon Awards are presented in four categories: the Alumni Talon Award, the President’s Talon Award, the Student Talon Award and the Faculty Talon Award.
