FAU Jupiter’s Lifelong Learning Society Announces Scholarship in Memory of Milton Bigham

JUPITER, FL (October 12, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University’s Lifelong  Learning Society announces the creation of a scholarship in memory of Milton Bigham, a Lifelong Learning Society student who passed away at the age of 94.

“My father was a self-made man who never went to college,” said Debi Beard, Milton Bigham’s daughter.  “He suffered a stroke and his body was crippled but his mind remained fluid, and he wanted to take classes at FAU’s Lifelong Learning Society.”

In memory of Bigham, his family and friends established the Milton Bigham Scholarship, which will award $240 to an individual to use for Lifelong Learning classes on the Jupiter campus.

“He told his daughter the only thing he regretted in life was the fact that he had not been able to attend college,” said René Friedman, executive director of the Lifelong Learning Society. “In the last year of his life he attended Lifelong Learning classes and fulfilled a lifetime dream.”

This annual award requires a short 500 word essay answering the question, “Why Lifelong Learning is Important?”  Applications are available at or call 561-799-8667.
