FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Receives Scholarship from the David Bensmihen Charitable Foundation

BOCA RATON, FL (September 11, 2012) - Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing received a pledge of $36,000 from the David Bensmihen Charitable Foundation for financial need-based nursing scholarships for undergraduate students.  In addition, the Foundation’s founders, Joseph and Lisa Bensmihen, will provide internships to FAU nursing students through Joseph’s award-winning, Medicare-certified home health care agency, Boca Home Care, Inc.  Combined with his licensed nurse registry, Boca Home Care Services, students will gain a wide range of experience in many facets of elder care.

“We are grateful to Joseph for choosing to support our nursing students,” said Marlaine C. Smith, R.N., Ph.D., F.A.A.N., Helen K. Persson Eminent Scholar and dean of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.  “Nurses are critical to the health and well-being of our community, and we must find ways to provide quality educational opportunities to those who wish to serve.  We commend Joseph for setting the example for the health care industry by investing in the workforce of the future.”

Jospeph Benshmihen started the Foundation in 2001 in honor of his father, David. Since then, he has been able to provide more than $500,000 in scholarship assistance to students in need of financial aid, helping them to continue their education, and ensuring their opportunity to receive a college degree.

“My father instilled in me that ‘education is freedom,’ which inspires our Foundation’s passion and purpose,” said Bensmihen.  “Home health care and other nursing needs of our community will only continue to grow over the next decade as our population ages.  I believe that supporting FAU and the College of Nursing will help build an educated nurse base right in our own backyard.”

Known for the diversity of its student body, the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing has approximately 1,500 students, 40 full-time faculty, and six affiliated centers and institutes. Faculty and students are dedicated to caring in nursing – expanding the science, studying its meaning, practicing the art and living caring day-to-day.
