FAU’s 'University Press' Recognized for Contributions to Local, National Community

BOCA RATON, FL (September 30, 2011) – Several student staff members of the University Press, Florida Atlantic University’s student newspaper organization, have recently been recognized within the local and national community for contributions to the field of journalism. Some student staff members were honored by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) for individual and group entries in the 2011 ACP contest, while others actively participated in outreach within the South Florida homeless community.

“The staff of the University Press has been an exemplary model of student journalism, by its process, protection of free speech and journalistic product,” said Gideon Grudo, UP editor-in-chief.  “We intend to maintain the integrity and strength of this student newsroom through award-winningjournalism and community outreach to ensure continued future success for this organization.”

Four past and present UP staff members recently were nominated for submissions within three categories of the 90th annual Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers National College Media Convention awards, scheduled to take place in Orlando on Saturday, October 29.

Sergio Candido, a senior majoring in communication, was nominated for “Story of the Year,” for “Gay & Mad,” a story about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues that students face while in school.  Judges for this contest selected finalists based on value or worth of the story; quality of reporting and quotes; quality of writing and editing; and credibility and leadership.

FAU alumnus and former UP features editor Alyssa Cutter was named a finalist in the advertising category for an ad/editorial supplement based on contemporary appeal, suitability for respective audiences, and effective use of photos, art, graphics, typography and color for the April 19, 2011 cover of the UP.

Mariam Aldhahi, a senior and managing editor of the UP, has earned an honorable mention in the category for newsmagazine/special section cover for her design of the April 19, 2011 issue of the UP newspaper.  Former UP staff illustrator, Adam Sheetz, also was awarded honorable mention in the category for illustration for his drawing titled “Monkey Math,” from the October 5, 2010 issue of UP

UP students also have donated their time and abilities to benefit the local community.  Recently, several UP students participated in “Will Write for Food,” a program sponsored by the Florida College Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists’ South Florida chapter. Sophomore studio art major Christine Capozziello, along with Grudo and Aldhahi, were among the 20 college journalists chosen nationwide to work at a homeless shelter in Hollywood to produce an issue of the shelter’s 20-page publication, Homeless Voice, in just 36 hours.  The students’ work can be viewed in the October issue of the Homeless Voice, one of the largest homeless newspapers in the country, at
