FAU Receives $20,500 from State Farm for Safety and Financial Literacy Initiatives
Youth Learn Leadership, Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Skills
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (July 3, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University has received $20,500 from State Farm to provide safety and financial literacy programming for students, faculty, staff and the community.
"FAU is appreciative of State Farm's generous contribution," said Carolyn Stewart, Ed.D, assistant vice president of community relations for FAU Broward. "Together, we are developing educational programs to enhance the quality of life for students, faculty, staff and the community through initiatives centered on safety and financial literacy."
A wide range of financial literacy programming has been offered, including a daylong youth leadership workshop series in conjunction with the South Florida Youth Summit, a program of Broward nonprofit L.E.A.D. Nation. More than 100 high school students attended the event, which featured speakers G. Eric Knowles, senior director of government and community relations for the Miami Dolphins; Nancy Wolfe-Smith, State Farm agent; and entrepreneur Felecia Hatcher.
Additionally, the FAU Center for Economic Education will offer programs for K-12 teachers in local area schools to provide teachers with the knowledge and tools they need to be able to effectively teach personal finance to students. The first program will be held in August, with programs running through January 2013.
Another important program funded through this initiative is the annual University-wide Safety Month, which promotes safety, disaster prevention and recovery throughout FAU's service area for students, faculty and staff. Safety Month has taken place annually for the past five years during the month of September.
"State Farm is committed to building stronger, safer, and better educated communities," said Jose Soto, State Farm public affairs specialist. "We are proud to support FAU's safety and financial literacy initiatives in our community."
