FAU Presents a Summer Full of Entertainment

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 15, 2013) – Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Theatre and Dance in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present an expanded Festival Repertory Theatre for 2013 with the musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum;” a comedy in three acts titled “The Man Who Came to Dinner;” the musical revue “Side by Side by Sondheim;” as well as two big band concerts and a four-piano extravaganza. The three plays are on a rotating schedule with afternoon and evening performances from Saturday, June 22 through Sunday, July 21. The concerts take place from Friday, July 26 through Sunday, July 28. All shows are at the University Theatre and Studio One Theatre at 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” which runs from Friday, June 28 through Sunday, July 21, is based on a book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The musical tells the lewd tale of Pseudolus, a Roman slave who strives to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. The farcical plot twists and turns with slapstick humor, cases of mistaken identity and social satire. The musical won several Tony Awards including “Best Musical” and “Best Book.”

“The Man Who Came to Dinner,” which runs from Saturday, July 13 through Saturday, July 20, is a comedy set in the 1930s. Radio personality Sheridan Whiteside, who is invited to dine at the house of a prominent Ohio family, slips on a patch of ice outside the front door and injures his leg. Following doctor’s orders, Whiteside is to remain confined to quarters, whereupon he delights in meddling with the lives of everyone in the household.

“Side by Side by Sondheim” features the music and lyrics of Steven Sondheim. The revue, which runs from Saturday, June 22 through Sunday, July 7, thematically ties together many of the famous composer and lyricist’s best known songs. A narrator reveals insight into the background, motivation and musical styles Sondheim used in the development of his work. Featured songs include “Comedy Tonight,” “Love is in the Air,” “Send in the Clowns,” “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” and “Side by Side by Side.”

Finally, Festival Repertory Theatre will close out the summer with a four-piano extravaganza on Friday, July 26 and two big band concerts on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28.
