JUPITER, FL (April 12, 2012) - The Lifelong Learning Society at Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus will hold its fifth summer semester from Tuesday, May 15 through Saturday, July 7. Classes will take place in the Lifelong Learning Complex at the Campus, 5353 Parkside Drive, Jupiter.
“For the fifth consecutive year, we are offering our students courses in our most popular subjects — political science, art history and film,” said René Friedman, executive director of the Lifelong Learning Society in Jupiter.
The Lifelong Learning program will offer three summer courses:
- “Politics and Public Opinion: What Do People Really Think and Does It Matter?” will be taught by Kevin Wagner, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the department of political science at FAU. This course will take place on Tuesdays, beginning on May 15 at 1 p.m. and will explore the origin, nature and content of public opinion in the United States, and how that opinion influences the conduct of politics.
- “Meet the Masters: A Continued Journey Through Modernism,” taught by Terryl Lawrence, Ph.D., a graduate of Columbia University with a doctorate degree in art, and an instructor of art history, drawing and mythology at the Digital Media Arts College in Boca Raton, will take place on Wednesdays, beginning May 16 at 1 p.m. This course will look at six major creators, including Isabella Stewart Gardner, the Cone Sisters of Baltimore and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and the art movements that led to their outstanding achievements.
- “Far Out, Long Ago or Very Funny: In Eight Films,” taught Benito Rakower, Ph.D., a graduate of Harvard University who received a doctorate in the teaching of English, will take place on Thursdays, beginning May 17 at 1:30 p.m. These eight films comprise a summer film festival and range from the treacheries of World War II, to the comic genius of Terry Thomas. Following the film, students are welcomed to participate in a discussion group.
