FAU Premieres a New Adaptation of ‘Lysistrata’

BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 1, 2013) – The Department of Theatre and Dance within Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters presents the Florida premiere of a new adaptation of Aristophanes’ musical comedy “Lysistrata.” The new adaptation was written by Broadway composers Galt MacDermot and Matty Selman. The play runs from Friday, April 12 through Sunday, April 21 in Studio One Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

“Lysistrata” is based on Aristophanes’ story about an Athenian housewife who organizes a strike among Greek women urging them to refuse sex with their husbands until the men end the Peloponnesian War. In the FAU production, MacDermot and Selman have worked with Professor and Director Laura Wayth to create a new score for the musical.

Galt McDermot is a multiple award-winning composer best remembered for his score to the musical Hair. Matty Selman is a composer and lyricist who has worked closely with McDermot on several projects.

Shows are on Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 1 p.m. General admission tickets are $20; students, faculty, staff, alumni and children under age 12 may purchase tickets for $12; and group prices are available. Tickets can be purchased at www.fauevents.com or by calling 1-800-564-9539.
