FAU Announces Winners of 17th Annual Internet Mathematics Competition

BOCA RATON, FL (March 29, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University and the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science’s department of mathematical sciences recently announced the winners of the 17th annual Internet Mathematics Competition for the 2011-12 academic year.  Cash prizes and certificates will be awarded at a ceremony during FAU Math Day on Saturday, March 31at 3 p.m. in the General Classroom North building, room 101, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.

Open to all high school students in the state of Florida, the competition consisted of six mathematical problems that were available online or in paper copy.  The competition encourages young students’ interest in solving mathematical problems of varying difficulty, challenges their mathematics skills and ingenuity, and prepares them for the more formal competitions which will be conducted in the spring by the Mathematical Association of America.

First place prize will be awarded to Peter Li, a senior from Seminole High School in Sanford.  Second place will be shared by Bradley Snider, a junior from American Heritage in Plantation, as well as Prudhvi Lokireddy, a junior from Coral Reef Senior High School in Miami.  Blaine Talbut, a senior from Fort Myers High School, will receive third place.  Honorable mention will go to Vivek Miglani, a freshman from Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
