FAU Hosts Tinnitus Awareness Day

BOCA RATON, FL (March 26, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of communication sciences and disorders will host its annual Tinnitus Awareness Day on Tuesday, April 10 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Communication Disorders Clinic, fourth floor of FAU’s College of Education building, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. The event will include free hearing screenings, educational resources, ear wax checkups and the ability to partake in future tinnitus research.

It is estimated that 50 million people suffer from tinnitus, and 2 million people see their doctor every year for tinnitus, or continuous ringing or noise in the ears. Many people with tinnitus do not understand that the condition is manageable and few are offered treatment options. Because of this, Ali Danesh, Ph.D., is opening up his clinic to tinnitus sufferers as a way to offer treatment options.

Danesh, the director of audiology at the FAU Speech and Hearing Clinic, has not only been conducting tinnitus research, but he has been lending support to tinnitus sufferers for more than a decade. He also is a help network volunteer for the American Tinnitus Association (www.ata.org).

No appointments are necessary, and parking will be available. For more information, contact the Communication Disorders Clinic at 561-297-2258 or totinnitus@fau.edu, or visit www.coe.fau.edu/academicdepartments/csd/clinic/Tinnitus.aspx.
