FAU’s College of Nursing Launches Online Journal to Express Human Values and Deep Connections Made within the Healthcare Industry
BOCA RATON, Fla. (January 15, 2014) - Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing professors Marguerite J. Purnell, Ph.D., RN, and Rozzano C. Locsin, Ph.D., RN, recently launched the Journal of Art and Aesthetics in Nursing and Health Sciences, a professional online, multimedia journal dedicated as a forum for nurses, physicians, social workers and others in the health sciences to express the caring they find within their practice. As journal editors, Purnell and Locsin seek to publicly honor and preserve the deep human to human connections made within the contemporary healthcare environment. Through artistic expressions, including poetry, visual art, music, dance, sculpture and expositions, stories displayed in vivid color, sound and motion are shared by nurses and their interdisciplinary colleagues.
“Patients know when they have been cared for. You know when you have been cared for, yet the exquisite ‘value-added’ experience of caring and being cared for in nursing and healthcare is most often rendered invisible and nearly always undocumented. This journal is a gift, providing a ‘safe place’ for caregivers to openly express the deep caring in their practice and for others who read their aesthetic contributions to appreciate their dedication and sacrifice,” said Purnell. “I think of nurses’ stories and artwork as memorials and testaments to the human spirit that ought to endure for many generations to come. When published in our journal, they are able to do that and serve to remind us all what truly matters.”
The inaugural issue of the Journal of Art and Aesthetics in Nursing and Health Sciences is located at nursing.fau.edu/magazines/jaanhs/index.html. Issues are published in the fall and spring by FAU’s College of Nursing. There is no fee for the fully online submission process, and all submissions of artwork and aesthetic items receive a blinded, peer review by an international panel.
