BOCA RATON, FL (January 26, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University will host a faculty and staff forum on student veterans on Friday, January 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.  The forum will feature a keynote by Ronald Fazio, counselor at the Pompano Beach Veterans Center, as well as a presentation by FAU student veterans and a faculty panel discussion.

“These are men and women who’ve given of themselves for their country,” said Corey King, Ph.D., associate vice president and dean of students at FAU.  “Our responsibility is to provide student veterans with an excellent and affordable education, and help them have a smooth and easy transition welcomed by the University community.”

Fazio’s lecture will focus on the student veterans’ military experience, followed by members of the, VeteranOWLS, who will discuss their personal transition from military to civilian student life and the on-campus experience.  FAU’s faculty panel will address how the FAU community can better provide a supportive and easy transition for student veterans.  Faculty panelists include Ronald Nyhan, Ph.D., associate professor of public administration within the College for Design and Social Inquiry; Barry S. Axe, instructor in the College of Business; and Sika Alaine Dagbovie-Mullins, Ph.D., associate professor of English in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

In conjunction with the forum, a veteran’s resource fair will begin at 2 p.m. in the Student Union Conference Center.  The fair is free and open to the public and includes participants from the VeteranOWLS, FAU’s Office for Students with Disabilities, and Student Involvement & Leadership.  Community organizations also participating include the Disabled American Veterans, the Pompano Beach Veterans Center and the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
