FAU to Designate Specific Smoking Areas on Boca Campus

Program Offered for Members of FAU Community to Quit Smoking

BOCA RATON, FL (December 14, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University will designate smoking areas throughout its Boca Raton campus for faculty, staff and students beginning January 2, 2010.  As part of the University’s Breathe Easy campaign, smoking will be permitted only in the areas marked.  Permanent signage indicating the areas will be placed throughout the campus in January.

“FAU’s Today & Beyond Wellness Center is pleased that the FAU community is supportive of the Breathe Easy campaign and these new smoking areas,” said Rosemary Dunbar, director of the center. “It is essential in helping to promote a healthier campus for everyone at FAU.”

In student-initiated surveys throughout the past year, more than three-fourths of FAU’s students, faculty and staff indicated support for creating designated smoking areas at its Boca Raton campus.   Other FAU campuses already adopted designated smoking areas.

For smokers trying to quit, FAU’s Today & Beyond Wellness program is offering a free, six-week smoking cessation program beginning on Monday, January 21, 2010 for members of the FAU community. Free nicotine replacement therapy, including gum, patches and lozenges, are available as part of the program.

More than 500 college campuses nationwide are now smoke-free and thousands more have specific, designated smoking areas on their campuses. A number of Florida’s universities are also smoke-free, have limited smoking or are considering limits.

For more information about the designated smoking areas or the smoking cessation program, contact Rosemary Dunbar at rdunbar@fau.edu or 561-297-3615.
