Press Release:

FAU Brings Three New Green Initiatives to Campus

BOCA RATON, FL (November 25, 2009)
– Florida Atlantic University has jumpstarted three new Green initiative programs to continue its efforts in guiding the University toward becoming a more sustainable institution.

FAU’s purchasing department will begin a comprehensive green initiative that will eliminate the printing and processing of more than one million pages annually. The department now will process its purchase orders electronically, which also will increase the department’s efficiency by cutting down turnover time for processing.

“The page count represents a ‘true’ savings which can be easily documented, along with a corresponding increase in efficiency,” said Ed Schiff, director of purchasing at FAU. “This is a positive step toward a proactive impact on the environment, as well as creating a lighter carbon footprint at the University.”

To further FAU Catering Service’s approach to being “green,” Chartwells has switched from providing lunch in bags and boxes made of paper pulp from wood during catered events to now using 100 percent recycled paper lunch bags.  Previously, the catering department used a minimum of 5,000 un-recycled lunch bags and boxes per year.

FAU Dining Services also continues its promotion of sustainability with offering a reusable Eco-Clamshell “to go” container in the Center Marketplace dining hall for $5 to help eliminate the use of Styrofoam boxes.  A student can return the clean Eco-Clamshell container after it has been used in exchange for a sanitized one each time they purchase a “to go” meal.
