FAU to Host ‘GreenFest 2009’

BOCA RATON, FL (November 2, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s Mission Green Student Association (MGSA) and the Campus Sustainability Committee will host “GreenFest 2009” on Wednesday, November 4 at FAU’s Boca Raton campus.

“The Mission Green Student Association is extremely excited to participate in this university-wide event,” said Alexander Van Mecl, president and founder of the organization. “It is a perfect time of year to encourage FAU’s students, faculty and staff to become more ‘green’ in their everyday living.”

FAU’s Breezeway will be transformed into the Greenway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where more than 40 vendors, exhibitors and nonprofits such as Greenpeace, Sprint, Tri-Rail, Home Depot and Chartwells will demonstrate how to be committed to protecting the environment.

Other activities on the Greenway include a human-powered blender contest, with smoothies made from blenders powered by alternative energy; a fresh, green market; an area to measure your carbon footprint; as well as a showcase of electric and hybrid vehicles.

FAU’s Students Advocating Volunteer Involvement and the Weppner Center for Civic Engagement & Service, along with MGSA, also will host the GreenFest Campus Clean-Up from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clean-up will take place in four, one-hour shifts, with participants assigned a designated area to clean up on campus. The sign-up area to participate will be located in the Greenway. The first 150 volunteers will receive a free T-Shirt and a voucher for lunch on behalf of Chartwells.

Roberto Borrero, tribal chairman of the United Confederation of Taino People and senior program coordinator for the American Museum of Natural History, will speak about “Mother Earth and the Importance of Sustainable Living,” from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.at FAU’s Traditions Plaza.

FAU’s department of housing and residential life will sponsor a number of games and activities relating to “being green” from 8 to 10 p.m. outside on the housing lawn, along with a movie night under the stars. Students also will be asked to turn off lights and unplug unused appliances in their dorms.
