FAU Receives Collection of Classic Books

BOCA RATON, FL (November 24, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Jack Miller Forum for Civics Education has been selected to participate in a pilot program designed to create reading rooms on select American campuses. The Liberty Fund Book Placement for Partner Programs of The Jack Miller Center selected six universities to each house a collection of 600 hardbound classic books on history, politics, philosophy, economics and law. The collection will help expose students to the ideas of America’s founders and those great thinkers, both ancient and modern, who shaped the understanding of what it means to live in a society of free and responsible individuals.

The collection of books, valued at $18,000, is provided by the Liberty Fund at no cost to the recipient universities. In addition to FAU, other schools selected to participate in the pilot program include Brown University, Roosevelt University, Christopher Newport University, the University of Texas-Austin, and Indiana University.

In addition to the Liberty Fund Book Placement for Partner Programs, the Miller Center is providing financial support to establish the Jack Miller Seminar and Reading Room to house the book collection. The Reading Room will be located in the political science department and will be a place that faculty and students can gather for research, collegial discussion and fellowship.

The FAU Jack Miller Forum also was recently awarded a National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH) grant in the amount of $30,000. The Forum will use the funds to host an inaugural conference in January 2009, on the theme of immigration and civic education in America. Conference participants will include scholars, policymakers, secondary school teachers and directors of private groups that promote civics education.

The Jack Miller Forum, which is organized by the department of political science in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, is part of a three-year initiative funded by the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America’s Founding Principles and History. The Miller Center provides a wide variety of resources to its partner faculty who are working to strengthen the teaching of America’s founding principles and history on college campuses across the United States.
