FAU Lecturer Talks About Growing up as the Daughter of Refugees from Nazi Europe

BOCA RATON, FL (October 28, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University will present the lecture “Afterimages: A Family Memoir,” on Monday, November 17 at 4 p.m. in the Social Science Building, room 170 on the Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be presented by author Carol Ascher, who tells the story of   growing up in Topeka, Kansas, as the eldest daughter of refugees from Nazi Europe. Born several weeks after her parents’ arrival in the United States, the author explores the conflicts of an émigré childhood and chronicles her return to Vienna to uncover her father’s roots.

Ascher has published six books, including The Flood, a novel; Simone de Beauvoir: A Life of Freedom, a biographical study; and Afterimages, on which this lecture is based.   Her short stories and personal essays, as well as her educational policy analyses have appeared widely in American newspapers, magazines, and literary and educational journals.   Ascher is the recipient of numerous literary awards, including two New York Foundation for the Arts Awards, a State Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture Fellowship, the Thomas Carter Award for Best Nonfiction and three PEN/National Endowment for the Arts Syndicated Fiction Awards. Her work has been translated into German, French and Portuguese.

The lecture is presented by FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters, and Alan L. Berger, Raddock Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Holocaust Studies and director of the Center for the Study of Values and Violence after Auschwitz.  No reservations are required for the lecture. Attendees should stop at the information booth on Glades Road for a one-day parking pass and directions. For further information, call 561-297-2979.
